Golden Showers

Image

At last some decent quality roses have flowered in my ‘garden’, they are in containers because of the lack of proper soil. Three years ago I got three free climbing roses from an offer in The Guardian newspaper, two have survived and Golden Showers a tough old rose has done best. Oskar wrecked the other! Last year in the appalling summer a few buds came and decided it was not a year to bother with. This year they have grown enough to work up the wall onto some trellis and this is the first rose to flower, the combination of sun, heat and heavy rain a couple of weeks ago.

In my old house I had dozens of roses, I love it when they bloom then develop the deep colours as they fade and ‘blow’. When I moved into that house there was a huge rose bush at the front, my mother reckoned at least 50 years old, it was a bush that grew over 6 feet each year, began flowering about now and still had flowers coming well into January! That too was Golden Showers.

The photograph was taken on a hot sunny clear day at 9.15am.
