Today’s photographs are of America Street and one of its side streets, Coolidge Street. The streets running off are named after Presidents – Jefferson, Hoover, McKinley, Hardy and others. There is a lot of nostalgia about terraced housing, often from those who didn’t live in them, but many were not so much poorly built but badly maintained through poverty and bad landlords. The ‘newer’ housing may look dated today but it was usually a great improvement on what was there before, and as can be seen an attempt was made to improve the environment people lived in, but it didn’t really change the people!
Originally built in the late Victorian time the terraced houses were cleared away in the late 60’s and new housing built. The street rises from the town centre towards Summerbank, at the top end of the street I live in, so this is a regular walk. At the bottom of the street there is a more recent build specifically for older people.
