Madison Street was once called King Street. The change to the US President’s name probably happened when the 6 towns joined together as Stoke-on-Trent, so not to be confused with the street in Fenton. The lower, eastern half of the street is a contrast between poor quality Victorian terracing and new build on the former Doulton factory site. When it reaches the High Street on one corner is the Cheshire Cheese pub, now closed and on the other an open space which used to be a butchers shop, the marble step can still be seen. There has been a Cheshire Cheese pub on all the maps I have seen going back more than 200 years, but more recently it had got a poor reputation and even major changes to its decor never seemed to improve its business or clientele!
