Renegade Readers – July 30th 2015

After missing last months’ meeting I was pleased to return to our reading group. As ever there was a diverse and enjoyable set of readings, some well known and some new, which is what the group is all about. The next meeting is on Thursday August 27th at 11am at Newcastle-under-Lyme Library. The pieces read this meeting were:

Arnold Bennett‘s short story News of the Engagement from his collection The Grim Smile of the Five Towns (full download)

A passage from Thomas Hardy‘s Far From The Madding Crowd  (full download) where Farmer Oak and Bathsheba first meet.

Philip Larkin‘s poem Church Going (Larkin reading the poem)

Lewis Carroll‘s poem Jabberwocky (or read by Benedict Cumberbatch)

A passage from Still Alice by  Lisa Genova where Alice first begins to feel disorientated

R.L. Stevenson‘s poem From a Railway Carriage (or read by David Shaw-Parker) from his collection A Child’s Garden of Verses (full download)

Selections from the Orange Prize winning novel The Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers by Xiaolu Guo
