Renegade Readers June 30th 2016

Well that was an interesting meeting. The readings were as usual quite remarkable and the discussion swung between the qualities of long thick novels, the steel industry, French philosophy during the Second World War, the plays of Samuel Beckett, translated works, and more which I seem to have forgotten! A good morning and early afternoon.

The pieces read included:

Two chapters (1938 and 1986) from Gunter GrassMy Century

A passage from Jean Rhys‘ novel Wide Sargasso Sea

Nicholas Evans‘ poem Within You from his novel The Smoke Jumper

Dale Wimbrow‘s poem The Guy in the Glass

Tony Harrison‘s poem From Long Distance

Edna  Eglinton‘s poem  Attempts at the Rational Approach from the collection The Nation’s Favourite Poems of Remembrance

Jack Prelutsky‘s poem Nine Mice

Michael Rosen‘s poem One of us fell out of the boat

Siegfried Sassoon‘s poem The General

Passages from Samuel Beckett‘s plays Endgame, Happy Days, Rough for Radio 1

Phew….

The next gathering will be on Thursday July 28th at Newcastle-under-Lyme Library, at 11am until 1pm, all are welcome to attend whether to read or listen. There is no theme and any genre, type or style of writing is most welcome, it’s a great opportunity to hear things you haven’t heard or read before or maybe to reacquaint yourself  with something.
